History, Stephen said, is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake.
— James Joyce, Ulysses

Hello. My name is Lela. I was born in Los Alamos, same as the atomic bomb. I write things.

Here's how I prove I know how to write things, if anybody asks: I have a B.F.A in Screenwriting from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and an M.F.A in Creative Writing from The University of Arizona. But if anyone asks you to prove you know how to write things, and they're using education as the standard to judge you, they are probably full of shit. When the writing is good, it doesn't matter how it came.

That said, I think learning is generally good and valuable, and I love that I get to teach what I've learned about writing at The Writers Studio.

I don't submit as much as my should, but my writing has nonetheless been published in GertrudeTrouble in the Heartland, Essay Daily, March Vladness.

You can read other things I've written on my food writing site: Bone & All. I started the site because I love food and I love to think about food and why and how it ended up a part of my body.

I used to work for a very excellent film fest called Rooftop Films, and they still let me help them pick the movies they show, which is weird and fun.

I'm working on the final draft of a novel that contains the sum total of everything I am and have been up to this point, which is an exhausting, terrifying, exhilarating relief.

I live in the Lost Barrio of Tucson, AZ with my wife Bree and two cats, Mae West and Bitten.

My pronouns are she/her or they/them (I contain multitudes).
